Converting Website Visitors Into Customers

As a small business owner in Iowa, you’ve probably worked hard to get people to visit your website. But once they’re there, how do you turn those clicks into actual customers?

Getting people to your website is just half the battle. The real work happens when you can convince those visitors to actually take an action. This could be making a purchase, booking an appointment, or just picking up the phone to give you a call.

Let’s discuss some tips to make visitors who come to your website actually take action.

1. Make a Good First Impression

First things first – your website needs to look professional and welcoming.

Think of it like greeting a customer walking into your physical store. You want them to feel comfortable, understand what you do immediately, and see why they should choose you.

Your homepage should do three things:

    1. Clearly explain what your business offers
    2. Show the value you bring to customers
    3. Make it super easy for people to take the next step

2. Use Calls-to-Action

Don’t make your visitors work too hard.

Every page on your website should have a clear call-to-action (CTA)

Maybe it’s “Book Now”, “Get a Free Quote”, or “Call Today”. Make these buttons big, bright, and impossible to miss. A tip, use action-oriented language that creates a sense of urgency

Instead of “Contact Us”, try something like “Get Your Free Consultation Now!”

It makes people want to click!

3. Have A Good Reputation

In a small town, your reputation is everything. People value authenticity, and one of the fastest ways to build trust is by showing real results from real customers. So, let your happy customers do some of the talking—add reviews to your website. It’s a simple way to prove you’re not just another business, but someone who delivers on their promises.

If you’re just starting out and don’t have many reviews, no worries! A few genuine, positive comments can make a big impact, especially when they come from people who truly believe in what you do.

Building your reputation takes time, but each step you take brings you closer to becoming the trusted name in town.

4. Make It Easy To Contact You

I can’t tell you how many websites bury their contact information like it’s some kind of secret.

Don’t do that!

Your phone number, email, and contact form should be front and center. Make it as simple for someone to reach out as possible.

Check out our Contact Page for an example on how to make it easy for visitors to get in touch with you.

5. Use Lead Magnets

A lead magnet is something valuable you offer for free in exchange for contact information.

For Iowa small businesses, this could be:

  • discount coupons
  • a free consultation
  • downloadable guide/newsletter relevant to your industry

The key is to make it so that visitors have something of value in exchange for signing up.

6. Make Sure Things are Phone-Friendly

Here’s the truth about your website: If it doesn’t look great on a smartphone, you’re losing customers. Most people will bounce away within seconds if your site isn’t smooth and fast across all devices.

This is a vital part of mobile responsiveness.

Mobile responsiveness is made to fit all types of screens depending on size (small phone screens to TV screens), rotation (if you turn your phone, design should adapt) and way of use (a touch screen will not be the same as a mouse or a keyboard).

So if a design is responsive, you should be able to use it on any device.

The good news? You don’t need to be a tech wizard to make this happen. Focus on clean, simple design that adapts easily, optimize your images, and make sure your content loads quickly.
